River Island is ticking all the boxes right now for autumn fashion, especially with their incredible price points. We caught up with fashion blogger Lydia Tomlinson of The Millennial Girl’s Guide to find out what her favourite pieces are right now, all under £50! What’s equally as good is you can Click & Collect all these pieces to your nearest CollectPlus Point which makes online shopping even more easy and convenient.
“The autumn season has struck us well and truly as the temperatures start to plummet! But the main question is, have our wardrobes caught up fast enough? Thanks to River Island you can now bag yourself a whole host of new season picks for under £50! I’ve rounded up some of my favourite pieces for A/W and incorporated something for every occasion; whether you’re already prepping your festive wardrobe, or looking for affordable trend pieces to update your basics, River Island have you covered!
1) The Checked Trousers £38
Name me an occasion you couldn’t wear a pair of grey checked trousers to. Okay, so maybe they won’t stretch to a black tie gala but you get the idea: these babies are flexible! A chunky roll neck and trainers? Your Sunday brunch look sorted! A crisp white shirt and block heels? And they’ll take you straight to the board room…
2) The Beret £12
We couldn’t not throw a little trend accessory in the mix, could we? Anything to make us look a little more Parisian and we’re SOLD! The beret is back with a bang this A/W; the perfect easy update to style up a simple outfit. Wear this pale grey shade with a matching coloured jumper and bright red lip – et voilà! French-chic complete!
There’s no point even starting to explain the significance of a white shirt in a wardrobe; it’s the glue that holds it all together, the cherry on the carefully iced bun… But get it wrong and it’s about as useless as a pet rock *sigh*. Indeed, the perfect white shirt needs to have some careful components; loose fitting, wide cuffs, a collar that isn’t too wide or too slim. River Island have got it right with this version, adding a little festive twist with diamanté buttons!
A pair of hoop earrings can go a long way. Simple enough to be worn alongside layered necklaces, statement enough to be worn alone with a sleek, swept back bun, these hoops are the perfect companion to any outfit in your wardrobe. The chunkier style makes for an even more modern twist… And a perfect stocking filler if we’re thinking that far ahead!
5) The Evening Trousers £45
Speaking of stocking fillers, it’s always wise to start planning ahead for any Yuletide events you have on the cards: starting with these jazzy little leopard numbers! Trendy trousers are a cooler alternative to a party dress, not to mention getting more bang for your buck! Style with a silk cami and blazer for evening, or a cosy black sweater and kitten heel boots for a more casual occasion.
6) The White Trainers £32
A side stripe on your basic white trainers adds a sports-luxe edge to your every day look. Team it with jogger-style trousers and oversized teddy coat for a snuggly autumnal day or dress them up with a midi dress, aviator jacket and cross body bag!
7) The Pencil Skirt £30
Not just for the office, the pencil skirt has undergone a modern update. Throw it on with your trainers or mid-heeled ankle boots and you’ve got a smart but on-trend day look. The belt on this checked pencil skirt means it’s extra flattering too (even if you have to undo it a bit post Sunday lunch!).
What I’m Wearing
Much like the white shirt, this style of top is a necessity for winter. Perfect for under blazers and teddy coats, or dress up with leathers like I’ve done here: this is a style you’ll be reaching for time and time again.
9) The Court Shoe with a Twist £38
I’ll be the first to admit that a plain court shoe can look a little too traditional with most outfits, but these killer courts are enough to turn any head! The beauty of a court shoe is how flattering they look on, not to mention giving you a little height boost for some added confidence. An on-trend pattern like this leopard pair is a great way to incorporate court shoes into your wardrobe in a modern way; wear with a full head-to-toe cream look if you’re feeling daring or keep it chic and simple with black.
Leather trousers walked onto the scene a while ago now, but this paper-bag shape gives an updated twist to the classic leather pants (not to mention avoiding any ‘Ross’ moments…). Paperbag trousers are such a flattering style and also an edgier replacement to mom jeans. Balance them out for evening with a tighter top and stilettos or partner with all your knits for daytime chic.
