We’ve teamed up with top fashion blogger Lizzy Hadfield of ShotFromTheStreet to share her ultimate autumn/winter coat guide for this season to help you decide which coat trend to invest in this year and how to style it.
We are fast approaching Winter which means the decision of what coat to go for is just around the corner. Every year I really take my time to shop around and consider what style to go for. It’s a piece I wear for months on end until we see Summer again, so it’s got to be versatile enough to wear with lots of different looks, but interesting enough to elevate my usual jumper and jeans combinations.
Check Long Coat
A classic long wool coat is always something I want to go for. The check print is a huge trend for Autumn and Winter, and the mix of neutral colours involved really does mean it will go with everything. I love long coats because they bring an effortless cool to any outfit, and I always like to go for a size up to accommodate for any oversized knitwear I have on underneath.

This one is a lot more fun, and is a style of coat I find myself tempted by every year. I wouldn’t consider this a trend piece anymore, because every Winter they become relevant again despite them being such a statement. Worn with any wash of denim, or all black for something a little more chic, I think this style of coat can be way more versatile than you think. Plus it would be the warmest and cosiest thing ever.

Another statement one here, and this is sort of a personal challenge for me. I have been loving the vinyl trend on other people for such a long time now, and have felt so stumped on how to style it for myself. It’s here to stay for another season, so I am determined to master this. If in doubt, all black is always a great place to start until you become more confident with the piece. I think the colour of this coat will be gorgeous for Winter, and will be a bit of a stand out in the mass of black coats out there.

As I said, we wear our coats for several months of the year, which is why there is no harm in investing. If you make the right choice you will find yourself reaching for it year after year too. I would stick with something with a very high wool or cashmere percentage, I find they last a lot longer and hold their shape beautifully. Going for a classic colour will ensure it won’t date and will work with everything in your wardrobe, and opting for something with a slightly interesting design will stop it from becoming boring while remaining a classic.

Finally, a true classic! Not a year goes by that I don’t stop and swoon over amazing outfits online that feature a trench coat. They have the ultimate effortless French vibes that I cannot ever get enough of. I love ones that are super oversized and androgynous, and of course that classic beige tone that is instantly recognisable. Wear over your favourite Summer dress now, and switch for a cashmere knit and high waisted jeans for the Winter. Really anything goes when it comes to styling these, I am not sure there is a more versatile style of coat!
