As we step into spring and summer, sunny weekends in the park are calling – not to mention full on holidays! Of course, SPF is important whether you’re out for a full day or just outside during your commute or lunch break. Beth Squires shares her favourite sun-protection buys.
Sunshine brings so much joy, stimulating the production of vitamin D as well as being thought to increase the production of happiness-inducing serotonin. But we also need protection from the more harmful elements of the sun’s rays. Stocking up on products with SPF included shouldn’t be just a spring/summer activity – the effects are damaging all year round – but now is a great time to update your skincare, sunscreen, haircare and makeup to ensure you’re not going without.
If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin like me, you may have had some problems with wearing SPF on your face in the past. The latest generation of mineral sunscreens offer high protection for the most exposed skin on your face, but also won’t rile up problem skin. Kiehl’s Ultra Light UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 (£36) has a high protection factor with a 100% mineral-based filter. The lotion is lightweight enough to go under makeup, or to wear alone as it’s a barely-there tint that’s suitable for any skin tone.
If you prefer a heavier base, try patting a compact like Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Matte Powder Foundation SPF 10 (£41) over it where you need more coverage, including the sensitive skin around your eyes. The mattifying nature of this formula is obviously helpful on hot days, and while the SPF is low, it’s certainly better than nothing, especially when layered with a higher SPF base. (Note: Layering two SPFs together doesn’t add the factor together, i.e. using a SPF 50 and a SPF 10 product does not equal SPF 60, it will just take on the higher SPF of the two products. In this case, SPF 50.)
Sheer & Summery
For lighter coverage days, Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done Hybrid Complexion Perfector Broad Spectrum SPF 20 (£28.50) is a great alternative. Think a sheer coverage foundation meets tinted moisturiser (it includes peptides and vitamins) with light-diffusing spheres to help blur any imperfections. Plus a not-too-shabby SPF20.
For those days when you’re by the pool or the sea, or feeling particularly active, Shiseido Sun Protection Liquid Foundation SPF 30 (£34) is a great one-and-done base. It gives a nice dewy look, is moisturising for your skin, and is oil, water and sweat-resistant. The long-lasting nature of it means it’s ideal for sports. Beach volleyball anyone?
Love Your Lips
The skin on your lips is sensitive and thin, and can get as damaged in the summer as it can in the winter. For a clear everyday balm that can be reapplied as much as necessary, Ultrasun SPF 30 Ultralip Balm (£6) protects from both UVA and UVB rays and contains Vitamin E and Blackcurrant Seed Oil for intense moisturisation. It’s also fragrance free. If you’re looking for a slight summery coral tint, Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 (£19.50) in Coral has been proven to provide 6 hours of significant moisture and will also protect.
Easy Body & Hair Protection
Ease is key for me when it comes to body SPF. I don’t want the application to hold me up when it’s time to go out or re-apply, so the spray and invisible formulation of Clarins Sun Care Oil Mist for Body and Hair SPF 30 (£22.00) is ideal. It’s a super easy-to-apply, dry oil spray – so there’s no white liquid to rub in – providing protection against UV rays and visible signs of photo-ageing. It can be applied to both body and hair to protect both quickly and easily. As an extra bonus, the new packaging of this product has been created in partnership with Plastic Odyssey to include recycled materials and help fight against the problem of plastics.
