No matter whether you’re staying in the UK or travelling further afield this summer, you’re going to need to be prepared for a bit of sunshine! We asked Beauty by the Bunny for her top tips on how we can prepare our skin for those long summer days.
I don’t know about you, but the words ‘Summer Body’ fill me with absolute dread. Despite the fact I’ve just taken up yoga, you can definitely tell that I had a good winter. Whilst I may have left the fitness aspect a little bit too late (ok, make that seriously too late), there are still a few steps I can take to feel that bit more confident in myself.
One thing I make sure I step up that bit more in the summer months is moisturising my body – I hate having dry skin when I want to wear shorts or a dress. Three times a week, in the shower, I start off with a good body scrub to get rid of all the dead skin. I love the Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Milk Scrub but I do have my eye on the Jo Malone Vitamin E Body Treatment Scrub. I then follow this with liberally applying a body cream or butter – I highly recommend the Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom Body Creme as it’s nice and luxurious whilst leaving your skin feeling hydrated and nourished. Some days I will use a body oil instead when I feel like my skin needs that little bit extra and the Elemis Frangipani Monoi Body Oil is a beauty to use.
Now no-one really wants to go into summer looking like Casper, but you don’t want to be sitting out in the sun too long – so fake it ’till you make it. I am the worst person at applying regular fake tans and now I tend to avoid them like the plague, but there are some products that I can always rely on to give my pasty skin a bit of colour without leaving me looking like a streaky mess. I prefer to use gradual tanners and the Decleor Aroma Confort Gradual Glow Body Milk is a lovely product to use. Not only does it give your skin extra nourishment and hydration, it gradually gives you a beautiful golden glow, so it’s perfect for tan novices like me. Putting tanning products on my face scares me even more than putting them on my body, but you don’t want your face to be several shades lighter than your body – thankfully, Charlotte Tilbury Overnight Bronze & Glow Mask is ideal. You just apply a thin layer before you go to bed and wake up to a gentle sun kissed glow – after three nights you definitely look like you’ve got a nice natural tan. It doesn’t streak and isn’t oily, so you don’t have to worry like you’re going to look like an extra from TOWIE! If I have managed to catch the sun, I like to use the Filorga Bronze Brume Mist to enhance my tan. It’s water-resistant so it’s great to use by the pool and it has an anti-ageing shield to offer you some protection, although you’re still going to need to apply suncream.
We all know the importance of using sun cream, but how many of us remember our lips? They can get burnt so easily, so I always use a lip balm that offers sun protection like the Ultrasun SPF30 Ultralip Balm. Enriched with moisturising blackcurrant seed oil, it helps to prevent the lips from the elements and can also be used underneath your lipstick. Despite using sun protection, sometimes the Sun can get the better of us and burning does happen (I once fell asleep on a beach when I was 12 and now I try to avoid burning as much as possible as it hurt … a lot!). I like to use the Nuxe After-Sun Lotion as you can use it on your face and body. It repairs, hydrates and perfects the skin as well as helping to prolong your tan. Applying this is so refreshing and soothing on skin that’s been in the sun for too long and it smells beautiful too.
There are two products that I swear by in the summer. I hate wearing foundation when it’s hot, but some days the face needs a bit of help, so I love using Origins VitaZing Energy Boosting Moisturiser. It works like a normal moisturiser, giving you hydration and protection, but it also energises the skin and adds a subtle hint of radiance that makes you look healthy and like you’ve just been on a nice holiday. I go back to this every summer and it is so good. Finally, seeing as the legs do come out to play in the summer, I like to use Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body to give my exposed limbs the illusion of being longer and leaner. It’s basically a highlighter for your arms and legs and really does help them to look slimmer with a nice hint of shimmer. Trust me, you’ll love it.
So there are some of the products I rely on to help me feel that I’m at least slightly ready for summer. I’m never going to look like a supermodel on the beach, but I can at least feel good about myself and know that my body is prepped and ready to go.
