Are you in the market for a new denim jacket? One of our fave wardrobe staples, these casual coats can be worn all year round, so it’s worth taking the time to consider which style will work best for you. Lizzy Hadfield of ShotFromTheStreet is back on our blog to advise, with some tips on how to style your new jacket.
“I am nothing if not an avid fan of denim. It’s part of my daily uniform, and there is no style of denim I haven’t tried. However, I mostly reserve this denim obsession for trousers, and don’t tend to adorn myself in denim aside from my trusty jeans. But every Summer I am drawn to a denim jacket, and then a little stumped on how to style it.
While the Canadian tuxedo is regularly considered on trend, it’s not a look I gravitate towards. Which means my beloved jeans have to go in favour of a denim jacket, and that is a big deal in my eyes! But over the past few weeks I have been challenging myself to style denim jackets, and I have found way more combinations I love than I expected.
How to pick the right denim jacket for you
In terms of picking the right one, I recommend going oversized always. Check the description of the item online, if it says it has an ‘oversized fit’ and the seam on the shoulders is dropped, then your usual size is perfect. If it’s a little more fitted then go at least one size up. Even check out the mens section (Levi’s mens are especially great), and pick a wash that will work with your wardrobe.
A mid wash will be great for Summer and festivals, a dark wash you can buy now and wear into Autumn, and also style with you favourite blue jeans for a more toned down double denim look:

Styling your denim jacket: Coloured Denim
If, like me, the idea of ditching jeans is a little too hard to cope with, then go for some coloured denim. The hight street always have a great selection in their Summer collections, and it’s a great way to update your denim collection generally. I love this washed pink pair from ASOS, but also a pastel yellow looks incredible with a mid wash denim jacket!
Lemon yellow jeggings: £42 at River Island.
Weekday Seattle High Waist Jeans: £30 at River Island.
Crew neck white t-shirt, £5 at ASOS.
Oversized lemon yellow denim Jacket, £49 at Mango.
I love the heavy texture of denim, and mixing textures in an outfit always gives you an interesting end result. Whether it be some linen or silk to contrast the heaviness of the denim, or some cords to compliment that heaviness.
Linen trousers with contrast waist, £29 at Mango.
Halterneck jumpsuit, £35 at ASOS
Paperbag waist trousers with tie, £25 at ASOS.
3. Summer Vibes
As we have been blessed with some good weather this Summer, chances are you might have a lovely sun dress in your wardrobe this season. Nothing screams summer like a mini sun dress under a denim jacket – I style mine with old Converse to add a little bit of grunge into the look.
Bow detail linen dress, £35.99 at Mango.
Oversized women’s denim jacket (pictured above), £49 at Mango.
Converse All Star hi top trainers, £50 at ASOS.
Pretty Little Thing button-through floral dress, £32 at ASOS.
4. Into Autumn
I know we might not be ready to talk about colder days just yet, but they will be here before we know it. A black denim jacket with some indigo jeans and a black knit is the perfect effortless Autumn look, and I am always an advocate for buying pieces you can wear now and into the season ahead!
