You don’t have to be running the Marathon to get involved in one of the most exciting sporting events of the year. Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines or thinking about signing up for next year, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the ‘Big One’ this weekend.
As excitement builds ahead of the event, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite products for runners and their buddies to mark the occasion, all available to order online for click & collect delivery to your chosen CollectPlus store.
Boost your blood sugar with Biscuiteers
Carbs can be a runner’s best friend, and if you know someone taking part in any big race they’ll certainly be grateful of a sugar boost once they’ve reached the finish line. We think that Biscuiteers’ Marathon Biscuit Box (£20), complete with greetings card and celebratory tin is the perfect way to congratulate someone who has gone the distance – whether that’s the full 26.2 miles or a more personal achievement.
Get the gear
If you’re thinking of taking part in a serious event any time soon, getting the right gear is essential and it all starts with the small stuff, and that includes socks! Often overlooked as an important ingredient in your running wardrobe, they are every bit as important as trainers when it comes to ensuring your feet are as ready as they can be for the task ahead. We rate the aptly-named Marathon Fresh ankle socks by Hilly for long-distance endurance.
When you’re going to be spending an extended time pounding the streets, trail or track, breathable fabric is your closest ally. When choosing running gear, make sure it has this important property, which really comes into its own when you start to work up a sweat. Nike’s Epic Lux tights are not only great to look at with their dazzling, geometric designs – they’re also made with mesh fabric that ensures a comfortable airflow as you run. There’s a good range available at John Lewis.
If you’re just starting out and want something a little less hi-tech, this style by New Look is an affordable alternative that really looks the part.
Stay on track
Finally, tracking your progress is a great way to stay motivated, set goals and prove to yourself (and others) that you can do it! For beginners we recommend using an app on your smartphone to record your runs, as there are plenty on the market including Runkeeper, Strava, Nike+ and Google Fit. But to avoid the annoyance of a broken screen, be sure to stash it safely in a workout-worthy phone holder.
Make sure whichever phone armband you choose is both secure, and allows full functionality of the touchscreen. This one by Belkin is available at Very.co.uk.
Once you’ve graduated to serious runner status, it’s time to invest in a more streamlined GPS watch or fitness tracker: there’s an extensive range to choose from at Wiggle.
Remember you can return many items to retailers including Wiggle, The North Face and John Lewis using CollectPlus, so we recommend buying items in a range of sizes to ensure you end up with a fit that you’d be happy to run 26 miles in. You can then send back any that don’t quite fit.
