Skincare Staples You Need In Your Life | Beauty By The Bunny

Sometimes it can be really difficult to know what skincare products to use, especially if you’re confused over what kind of skin type you have. Is it dry? Oily? Combination… (What does that even mean?) Well we are in luck, because Angela of Beauty By The Bunny is on the blog to tell us all about her favourite skincare products that are available to Click & Collect to your nearest CollectPlus store. Read on to find out her top tips and must-haves…

“Skincare can be tricky.  Take one look at the vast majority of products available and tell me that it’s not more than a little bit daunting.  We all have different skin types and needs so knowing which products to buy can be difficult.  Well my lovelies, don’t you worry.  There are some goodies out there that I swear by – they are my skincare staples.  I like to have a stash of products that I know work well and that I can return to time and again.  Now some of these products are more suited to the slightly more mature end of the market, but the majority are perfect for skin of all ages.

If there’s one thing that I think every woman needs in her skincare arsenal, it’s a good cleanser.  We all pick up dirt and grime throughout the day, not to mention the remnants of our makeup by the end of the day.  Cleansing your skin thoroughly and effectively is the bare minimum you need to be doing for your skin and gives you the perfect foundation to build your own regime upon.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish – from £14.50 at John Lewis

I’m not ashamed to admit that I have a shelf full of different cleansers in the bathroom, from liquids to balms.  However, the cleanser I always stock up on has to be the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish.  This is an iconic cleanser and has a bit of a cult status and there’s good reason for this – it works!  Whether you’ve got 4 layers of heavy duty waterproof mascara on, or you went all in with the eyeshadow, this beauty will remove it.  You don’t have to spend half an hour scrubbing at your skin, which you really don’t want to be doing, especially around the eye area.

The cleanser has a two-phase action designed to leave you with perfectly clean skin.  First up, you have the Cleanse.  You just need a couple of pumps of the cleanser and massage over your (dry) face.  It has a nice and rich, creamy texture that is free from mineral oil and will quickly remove your makeup.  Then you Polish.  The cleanser comes with a muslin cloth and you just wet the cloth in warm water and use to polish off the cleanser – as well as dead skin cells, so you get a gentle exfoliation with your cleanse.  If you’ve never tried Cleanse & Polish before then you don’t know what you’re missing.

As well as having a good cleanser, you also can’t beat having a great moisturiser.  My Mum didn’t really have a beauty regime, but she always moisturised and taught me how important it was too.  I’ve been moisturising my skin since I was a teenager and it really does pay off.  Now picking your moisturiser can be difficult and it’s hard to recommend one that will appeal to everyone, but I have one that has never let me down.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra Rich – £82 at John Lewis

Elemis do the nicest skincare, and their Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra-Rich has saved my skin on many an occasion.  Don’t worry if you think this sounds too rich for your skin as they do have a regular version, but I’m going to tell you about this one as it is amazing.  I think after the long cold winter, we’re all suffering from dry skin and this moisturiser is ideal for that.  Central heating has left my skin feeling in need of some serious hydration and this has been ticking all the boxes.  If you’re in your early twenties then this might be a bit much for you, but if like me you’re in your thirties, or older, then I highly recommend this.

The Marine Cream has been specially formulated to provide the skin with intense nourishment and moisturising, making it a must if your skin is feeling a little bit parched.  It contains a blend of Padina Pavonica (a Mediterranean algae), as well as Ginkgo Biloba, Chlorella, Rose and Mimosa and it feels heavenly on the skin.  Within just a couple of weeks of using this you start to notice some real improvements – wrinkles appear reduced and your skin appears firmer, more toned, more supple and elastic, and hydrated.  As I mentioned, if your skin isn’t that dry, then the regular Marine Cream is just as good.

Having a nightly routine is also important.  Our skin repair itself whilst we sleep, so you want to be helping it with some products that are designed to work at nighttime.  If you think about it, we’re asleep for around 8 hours a night, so utilise that time to make your skin look amazing.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate – £38.00 at House of Fraser

Over the past couple of years I have fallen hard and fast for oils and concentrates and the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate has become a must have product in my skincare collection.  It has been specially formulated to work at night to instantly penetrate the skin and replenish moisture and recover radiance.  You wake up in the morning with skin that feels softer and smoother as well as looking younger, and who doesn’t want a bit of that?

The concentrate is enriched with a whole host of naturally derived ingredients such as Evening Primrose Oil, Omega-6 fatty acids and essential oils and it’s like it’s feeding your skin with goodness whilst you sleep.  A little goes a long way too, so don’t be worried that you’re going to be covering your face with masses of product.

Using a good eye cream at night is also a good idea.  For too long I didn’t bother with eye cream and since I’ve been converted to the benefits of them I’ve noticed a big difference.  Our eyes can easily give away our age if we don’t look after them, so if you’re trying to fight the signs of ageing, then incorporating an eye cream into your regime is wise.  I like to use a different one at night to the one I use in the morning.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Synchronized Complex II – £49 at John Lewis

Since hitting my thirties, I’ve become slightly obsessed with making sure that my eye area isn’t making me look old and Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Synchronized Complex II is the one eye cream that I use at night because it does the job.  There are several key signs of ageing around the eyes – fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, dryness, dark circles and uneven skin tone – and this deals with them all.

It uses Chronolux CB Technology to maximise the ‘power of night’ to leave your eye area looking more youthful, vibrant and brighter.  Every once in a while I’ll think to myself that I should maybe try another eye cream at night – within days I am back to Advanced Night Repair Eye.  It genuinely makes such a difference, especially with the puffiness that plagues my life.  The formula also feels nice and refreshing with a silky gel texture that is heaven at the end of a long day.

My final skincare staples are both face masks. I love doing a face mask and probably do about 4 a week – someone please tell me that this is normal and not at all excessive!  I like to alternate between a traditional face mask, mostly clay or mud based ones, and then also sheet masks, so I’ve got both to share with you.

bareMinerals DIRTY DETOX™ Skin Glowing & Refining Mud Mask – £32 at John Lewis

The bareMinerals DIRTY DETOX™ Skin Glowing & Refining Mud Mask has been a fairly recent discovery for me and now it is a key part of my skincare.  I’m all about achieving a healthy glow to my skin and this mask is perfect for that.  Your skin is left purified, smooth and luminous.  Whenever my skin is looking a little bit on the dull side, I reach for this and can notice the difference very quickly.

The mask contains 4 mineral-rich clays, purifying charcoal and a Papaya Enzyme infused refining complex.  It feels great on the skin, and you’ll start to feel the benefits from the first use.  To me, applying a face mask and putting my feet up for 15 minutes or so is bliss.  It’s that little bit of ‘me time’ in the day to unwind and relax and you’re left with gorgeous skin afterwards.  I would recommend applying this one with a brush though as it can get a little bit on the messy side.

Charlotte Tilbury Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask – £18.00 each or £60.00 for a set of 4 at House of Fraser

One mask that isn’t remotely messy is the Charlotte Tilbury Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask.  Traditionally sheet masks are wet and slimy, but this is totally dry.  Honestly, it’s just pure genius this mask.  Now before we get into the details, let’s just tackle the price.  Yes this is a pricey mask, but you can use each mask up to 3 times, so it actually works out to be extremely affordable when you look at it that way.

This mask is more than a little bit magic.  The fabric of the mask contains all of the active ingredients and the Bio-Mimetic Delivery System allows the active ingredients to stay on your skin longer than with a normal sheet mask, as well as powering them down into the epidermis.  What is great about this mask is that it works where YOUR skin needs it, so it will work differently for each person, depending on what your skin is in need of.  It’s also amazing just how well this mask works – after using your skin is smoother, brighter, more hydrated and lifted and your wrinkles appear reduced.  If you only ever try one sheet mask then this is it.

Phew we’ve made it to the end!  There’s so much more that I could say about these products, but don’t just take my word for how good they are.  Try them for yourself – your skin will thank you for it.”
