Alas, we’re in that ‘funny period’ (*ahem*, this is a technical fashion term) where everyone thinks summer is soon upon us, but realistically we’ve got some months ahead of us to slowly transition our wardrobes from teddy coats to paisley dresses. We can’t (unless you have a lengthy holiday in the Maldives coming up), jump from one to the other. So instead of finding ourselves in limbo land, we need to curate our wardrobes around the weather and discover in-between dressing. Otherwise known in the fashion world as ‘transitional’ or ‘trans-seasonal’.
If you’ve been a follower of my style at all you’ll know my main rule is to stick to classic pieces; by all means add a trendy twist or throw in a new-season accessory, but when it comes to dressing each morning, you’ll be thankful when you’ve stayed faithful to those trusty staple pieces. And so ensues the following to bring to your transitional wardrobe…
And if, like everyone else, you’re caught up in the millennial rat-race, you can order your transitional wardrobe through CollectPlus for an easy delivery service. Choose from over 7,000 locations across the UK, and pick your order up at your convenience (plus the stores are open early ‘till late so you can always pop in after an evening meeting, or maybe after you’ve finished catching up on your favourite Netflix series…). Whatever your schedule, CollectPlus makes life easy for you! So now you know how you’re going to order, let’s talk about what’s going to be on your transitional wish-list…
Needless to say, the trench coat has to make an appearance on this list. It’s a coat of all time and will remain a wardrobe staple forever. The trench coat’s charm comes from both its practically and utility-chic style; meaning you can just throw it on with the most basic of outfits and look like Audrey Hepburn off-duty. Yes, this is possible with the trench coat!
So, what’s the updated version of the trench for this season…? Move away from traditional camel tones and instead veer towards cooler neutrals. Try sage green, ‘griege’ and putty shades – they look sharp layered over a crisp white shirt!
Wear with your roll necks and denims for early spring and as the weather gets a bit warmer, experiment over a pair of ‘city’ shorts and a t-shirt. Et voilà, a piece that will take you from now right through to summer!
They took to the helm of the fashion scene at the end of summer 2018, but the midi satin skirt is set to rise in popularity even more so over the coming months. Skirts were a neglected part of our wardrobe for a large part of the 10s, with haunting memories of mini skirts and tight t-shirts from the noughties. But the break-through of the midi means skirts are back with sophistication. Three cheers! Women of all ages can turn to the midi as a faithful friend: they’re chic, they’re comfortable and well, they’re way more practical than a mini!
For transitional dressing, pair your midi skirt with some heeled white ankle boots or chunky trainers (occasion dependent!) and keep warmer at the top with a slightly cropped jumper (mohair knits are a great contrast with the smooth fabric of the skirt). Then as we progress through the season, experiment with sandals and swap the jumper for a tee and leather jacket.
The chocolate brown of this River Island slip nods nicely to the safari/neutrals trend of 2019. Style with a leather handbag for early spring and then an architectural wooden one for later in the season.
The thought of white jeans can often knock us nauseous with fear of un-flattery. The sickening wave as we imagine too-tight white skinnies revealing all of our usually-hidden figure woes. But, never fear, white jeans have had a stark reinvention this season and you’ll find that, actually… they’re really quite flattering!
Forget dazzling white, this season it’s all about a neutral tone. Off-whites and slightly beige shades are what you’re aiming for, like the Mango pair styled here. Pair with anything from a black t-shirt, heels and statement earrings right through to a neutral toned knit and loafers. They’re just as versatile as denim or leather trousers, but bring a lighter colour palette into your transitional wardrobe.
Opt for a ‘mom’ or straight leg style to keep it totally modern and wear them with well, pretty much anything! Just watch out for slightly damp park benches and bus seats…
Don’t forget you can order all these pieces through CollectPlus for a stress free delivery service (yes, your neighbour won’t be barking at you again saying she had to answer the door in her dressing gown to sign for your parcel…). Happy transitional shopping!
